Carlo Strappa, Intermac Glass & Stone Division - Marketing Department
In recent years the South American market for glass processing machinery, and the Brazilian market in particular, has been very lively and, despite the slowdown in the global market, remains very active. This is due to the presence of a large number of companies which are interested in increasing both their technological capabilities and their productivity in response to the growing demand for manufactured goods in their national market.
Intermac will be exhibiting its organisational and technological strengths to its Brazilian clients at the Glass South America trade fair (São Paulo, 6-8 May 2010), as it continues to reinforce the confidence and trust of the relationships that it has developed with clients throughout South America in recent years.
Intermac will be presenting on its stand some of the key solutions including the 5 axis Master 35 work centre which represents state of the art technology in the CNC glass processing equipment sector. Through its simple and intuitive interface the PC based numerical control system facilitates programming of the most complex processing procedures.
Serie V is a vertical drilling machine that is ideal for companies that need to process large scale structural glazing. Equipped with two opposing heads, Serie V is not just capable of drilling, but can also carry out grinding and edging and small milling procedures (e.g. notches for doors), making it possible to carry out all of the operations necessary for the preparation of glass sheets on a single machine, thereby saving time and space and, above all, keeping the investment required modest.
Genius 37 CT RS is the cutting table with the highest level of automation in its market segment. The combination of performance and affordability (similar to that which made the Genius 37 CT such a huge success), compact horizontal and vertical dimensions and modest cost, make this the most sophisticated shaped cutting table in the entry level market. Genius 37 CT RS allows craftsmen and smaller companies to be ideally equipped to resolve all their float glass cutting problems.
Completing the presentation of the glass cutting product range, the stand will also exhibit a combined float and laminated glass cutting line. The Comby R-37 model is an intelligent combination of the Genius CT (monolithic) cutting table and the Genius 37 LM (laminated). The principal innovation in this line is its vertical lung, a patented device that allows the rotation of the horizontal profiles without having to move back the sheet being processed. This means that the dimensions of the machine are extremely compact.

The present day window and door fittings industry is a marriage of innovation and design with twin values, on the one hand are the technical aspects relating to practicality, thermal and noise insulation, and on the other the aesthetic values of the design characteristics of the fittings.
Both characteristics are dependent on a number of factors, but the quality of window and door fittings is primarily a function of the way in which they are produced, and therefore of the technology used to produce them.
Biesse, which is one of the world leaders in panel processing, has launched new technologies for the window and door fittings sector, producing the new range Winline, avantguard machines aimed at the Italian and European market.
The machines for the production of Biesse windows and doors provide a response that is targeted at the highly complex and continuously evolving market, guaranteeing a high quality response to requirements for certification and raising the standards of performance demanded by clients today.
Uniwin and Uniprof are technologies belonging to the Winline range which are capable of producing standard and specialised components in real time and in less than half the space demanded by traditional systems. Interpreting the concept of "Lean manufacturing", Uniwin and Uniprof provide a simple and integrated response to the complexity of products and the volaitility of the market by allowing production of all that’s needed when it’s needed.
The Winline range was recently completed by the innovative Rover C-WMS (Windows Manufacturing System) dedicated for smaller producers. Rover C WMS is the first high flexibility work cell, specifically designed for the production of standard and specialised windows and door fittings. It makes several new functions available, from a new system of piece locking modules to the piece marking system fully integrated in the machine.
Biesse’s window and door technologies offer efficiency, reliability and innovation, with no limit on design and creativity.

A few months ago, a special machine, which Intermac developed specifically for a major customer, namely Seele Sedak GmbH & Co.KG of Germany, was installed and has been fully operational for several months now in Sedak’s plant of Gersthofen.
Sedak is member of the Seele group and creates advanced glass products and spectacular all-glass structures. Seele Gmbh & Co. KG is a German company that collaborates with the world most important architecture studios to create great avant-garde projects.
Over the years, Seele has linked its name with public buildings and landmark works that have entered common imaginary such as “The Cube” in New York, the national stadium of Beijing, the Allianz Arena stadium in Munich, and so on. One of the major strong points of the company is its profound knowledge of materials such as glass, steel and aluminium.
The excellence in engineering development is backed by an outstanding production capacity, which combines an almost artisan care in making its products using the most advanced work tools.
The collaboration between Intermac and Sedak, began a few years ago when the German company bought a Master 35 work centre. Given the success of this first experience and the credit gained from Intermac technology in the production department of Gersthofen, when the time came to buy a special machine to process non-standard glass sheet sizes, the Pesaro-based company was at once shortlisted among few earmarked bidders that would take part in the tender for this supply. After a series of in-depth technical meetings and with the commercial transaction being concluded, Intermac proposal was considered the best and the most suited to meet Sedak´s requirements.
Mr. Alessandro de Angelis, Intermac area manager for Germany comments : “From the very first meetings with Sedak technical staff, it became clear that the object of the transaction was a machine that would be unique in the world and that what they were asking us was in fact to offer our contribution to set up a production line that would be unique in the world. A micro niche with a very high added value, where the finished product, crystal sheets of “impossible" sizes, is destined to be used in the most ambitious projects by the most renowned architects all over the world. A world where sedak can boast highly respected credentials and where suppliers compete on the basis of their production capacity and their know-how, on projects and details of great value and prestige.
The blend of elements that make up the basis of the project is truly astounding. On the one hand there is a short-list of very high level partners and us, as Intermac, we cannot but be proud of being given the opportunity to rise up to this challenge. On the other hand, there is a company like Sedak, that has such a huge know-how in the field of project development and an absolutely extraordinary organisation and logistics management capacity. Suffice it to say that no glass producer has the experience required to transport glass sheets of such sizes, so Sedak has struck an agreement with a glass transport partner company to deliver the sheets from the float plant to its workshops”.
The Master 155 machine, which has been installed in the Gersthofen workshop, can perform cup wheel edge grinding on sheet sized 3300 x 15000 mm (which become 4000 x 15080 mm in case of peripheral grinding using 100 mm diameter tools). In addition, the machine can work in double station, subdividing the work area in two. In this way, the maximum workable sheet dimensions for peripheral grinding will be 4000 x 6280 mm (station 1) and 4000 x 6780 mm (station 2).

Last December HSD S.p.A., a company of the Biesse Group, incorporated MC s.r.l. through a merger of the companies. MC s.r.l. is a leader in the production of aggregates and drilling units for the wood, aluminium, glass and stone processing industries.
This operation was part of the broader process of transforming HSD into a Lean Company, aimed at reducing costs while at the same time improving product quality and services provided, in order to achieve total client satisfaction.
The integration of MC and HSD adds substantial value: above all it allows growth in the technological and production know-how of MC’s aggregates and guarantees a real strengthening of after sales service. MC’s clients can take advantage of HSD’s commercial and service network, in particular the three operating subsidiaries in germany, China and the U.S.A.
The Lean manufacturing approach has also led to rationalisation of the production structure, which was previously spread over four separate sites and which is now focused on a single modern and integrated factory. The Operational Headquarters are in Pesaro in Piazzale Alfio de Simoni, while the legal and administrative headquarters will remain in Via della Meccanica 16.
Fabrizio Pierini, Mechatronics Division Director, stated: “This is a concrete response to the current difficult international economic environment and represents a great opportunity to implement a virtuous cycle of synergies in a win to win context”.
